St Mary's Lancaster (The Priory) in The Age of Transatlantic Slavery

A major new piece of historical research into Lancaster Priory during the time of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Facing the Past

This new research paper, a major piece of historical research, was commissioned by Facing the Past. It was written by Melinda Elder and first published in 2023. Melinda Elder has worked with the Open University and is currently Honorary Research Fellow in the History Department at Lancaster University. She has researched the region’s connections with transatlantic slavery for 40 years. She is author of The Slave Trade and the Economic Development of Eighteenth-Century Lancaster (1992) and has also written on Morecambe Bay’s connections with the Liverpool slave trade and on aspects of Lancaster’s merchant community.
